Karakate Anutrakulchai
A top 4 students from Twinning Engineer Programs (TEP), Faculty of Engineer, Thammasat University, gets the scholarship from Nottingham University. Majoring in chemical engineering is effortless for her. Let’s question on “What factors make her successful in studying as a engineering student? And how is she managed to get scholarship?” So, Kate is more than ready to share us how she can be a top engineering student in a top university.
Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Karakate Anutrakulchai. I am a third-year student studying chemical engineering at the University of Nottingham. For my first and second year, I studied at Thammasat University because I am in the Twinning Engineering Programmes (TEP). This programme is a collaboration between Thammasat University and the University of Nottingham. The curriculum requires that students spend their five semesters at Thammasat University and finish the rest of the coursework at the University of Nottingham.

What attracted you to study in England?
I am keen to study in UK because The UK has become one of the top destinations to study around the world and the United Kingdom has much to offer international students that other English-speaking countries cannot offer. In fact, the UK is now the second most popular destination for international students, behind the US. Also, the University of Nottingham where i have chosen to study is well-known and ranked at 84th in the world. That is to say; it is one of top 100 the best universities of the world. Moreover, most of my seniors gave me an impressive reputation of the University of Nottingham and society in England. So, it was interested me to study here.
How do you get this scholarship?

Thammasat Undergraduate High achiever Scholarship is only for top four students who can achieve a high score. My score is in a third of rank. Then, I received a scholarship for international students from the University of Nottingham which deduct 40% of the tuition fees.

What do you want to be in the future? Why?
I want to be a process engineer, which its task is to control and design the process of plant or refinery. Being as a process engineer, I can help improve production speed, eliminate unneeded steps from a process, make the process or system safer, and increase the quality, consistency, and/or volume of output. By and large process engineering provides a way for industries to reduce their costs while increasing the overall efficiency of their processes. Furthermore, I want to do this field of engineering because I can apply almost all of subjects or my modules that I have learned from studying chemical engineering such as Fundamentals of Process Control, Plant design, Process Engineering Project, and Separation Processes etc.
How do you manage your work life balance?
To be honest, it is literally difficult for me to balance between work and personal life. However, I always set manageable goals each day in order to take care of important tasks first and eliminate unessential ones. Ask for help when necessary. Whenever I get tired, I always think of my future and how much my parents need to pay for me studying in England. So, when those things come to my mind, they are like an incentive for me to study hard.
What is your biggest challenge you came across, and how did you handle to it?
Since I am studying abroad, language is one of my challenges which I have to overcome. For the first time I came to England, I found that it was difficult to listen to British accent. I think that watching movies is a great way for me to improve my English, so I set my goal to watch a movie everyday. Moreover, I tried to make friends with foreigners and talked to them as much as I could. After I have done both things for two to three months, I found that my speaking and listening skills has improved and became more fluent.
What is your achievement in your life so far? and what’s next?
My achievement in life now is receiving a scholarship from the University of Nottingham. My next goal is to be able to apply for Oxford University because it is one of the oldest, most beautiful and most acclaimed universities in the world!
Who is your inspiration to achieve your goal?
Actually, a particular person for my inspiration to achieve the goal is myself. I prefer to compete with myself and do everything the best as much as I can do because rather than competing against the next person, I can chase my future self. Also, the most important part of competing against myself is the ability to set my own values and metrics. I choose the goals that fit me best, and what I really want to compete on — and what I don’t.
Could you suggest any tips to both effectively study and do what you like?
For me, I try to pay attention in every lectures and try not to miss any classes as well. Sometimes, when I don’t understand the lesson, I will look up videos on websites such as YouTube which helps me to study and understand concepts more profoundly so that I am completely comfortable with the material. Also, I always prepare to read books before the exam about one to two weeks and do all exercises that teachers give me.
What would you see yourself in the next 3 years?
In the next three years, I might get master’s degree in business management because besides engineering, business management is another one that I want to study. On the contrary, I might probably be doing work in oil refinery or in plant of some companies.
